Waterberg Plateau Park

In contrast to the Etosha drought, Water mountain Surprisingly green. The plateau rises from the flat landscape, becoming a landmark for miles around. The reddish-brown rocks catch the light, and at its foot grow shrubs and trees rarely seen further north.

Walking

Waterberg is an excellent hiking area. There are short routes around the rest camp and longer trails that wind up to viewpoints on the plateau. Some are only accessible with a guide, especially the summit hikes. It can get hot and humid in the summer months, so an early start is worthwhile. Conditions are ideal in the cooler months from May to September.

Wildlife

You're less likely to encounter large game here, although klipspringers, fallow deer, warthogs, and baboons do live there. This is precisely why the walk feels so relaxing. As you gradually ascend, the landscape around you changes. Grassy plains, bushy terrain teeming with birdlife, and impressive views.

The chance of seeing predators is high, but the experience is different from Etosha. The animals live in spacious, fenced-in enclosures where they roam freely, and the game drives are focused on observation rather than hunting for the perfect shot.
