5 reasons why you should not skip South Croatia during your holiday

On holiday to South Croatia, that sounds wonderful, doesn't it? Despite the fact that the country has not yet been put on 'yellow' from the Netherlands, there are certainly possibilities. With a negative PCR test (not older than 48 hours) you are welcome as a tourist. During our roadtrip through Europe we left Croatia not pass us by, and happy. What a beautiful country it is. A popular destination are of course the Plitvice Lakes, but have you ever thought about the south? In this article we give you 5 reasons why you should not skip South Croatia during your vacation.

1.Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is perhaps the most important reason why you should not miss southern Croatia during your holiday. What a beautiful city it is. Not only because of the beautiful, centuries-old buildings, but also because of the beautiful location. The city is surrounded by the clearest blue water and there are also paradisiacal (city) beaches. Also nice, you will find various locations where Game Of Thrones recordings took place.

We have spent a day here and think this is certainly enough time. The center is not big, so plenty of time to wander around, sit on the terrace, eat ice cream, visit the harbors and even lie on the beach.

TIP: park just outside the center, for example on this place† Here you pay €1 per hour, while in the middle of the old town you pay more than €10 per hour in the main parking lot.

TIP: are you by car or camper? Be sure to drive too here upwards. From here you have a beautiful view over the city. Truly breathtaking. You can also watch the sun go down from here.

2. Local wines

Southern Croatia is certainly also known for its delicious, local wines. Not many people are familiar with it, we didn't know it either. This is because the wines are generally not exported (to the Netherlands) due to the small scale of most vineyards. In southern Croatia you will find the Dingač wine region on the Pelješac peninsula. There, delicious wine is made from the Plavac Mali grape. We did a tasting at 'Winery Milos' and believe us, we had never tasted anything like it before! So highly recommended.

3. The best oysters

Speaking of Croatian gastronomy, oysters! We also had to be reminded of this, but on the Pelješac peninsula there are several possibilities to taste the best oysters. The reason that the nursery does its job so well here is the combination of the seawater that is supplemented with water from the freshwater natural sources, according to our guide Daniel.

We booked a tour with Bota Sarez in Mali Ston and it was well worth it. A cruise along the oyster farm, explanation about the cultivation of oysters and mussels and of course tasting! In addition to oysters and mussels, wine, grappa, bread, water and sweet local snacks were included. We paid €30 per person for a private tour.

From there you can continue to Hvar, but you can visit this island from several places. Including from the beautiful city of Split. Brač is also on many people's list, partly because of the popular Zlatni Rak beach that you can visit there. View the costs for the ferry via the website of Sailing line.
