The regions are particularly green and invite you to discover diverse landscapes, ideal for all kinds of outdoor activities. The Moselle region
Wine
The Mosel region is also the Luxembourg wine region, which you can see right away from the vineyards that cover the hills. Here grapes are processed into Rieslings, Pinot Gris of AuxerroisThese wines are proudly poured and served in one of the picturesque villages in the region.
For the true wine lover there is plenty to do at the many wineries and festivals.At Domaine Henri Ruppert for example, located in a beautiful location, you can taste their wines in a unique wine bar. An example of a wine festival is Wine Culture Enjoy, which takes place in August. Several wineries from the region organize this event, where you can taste their delicious wines.
a Schengen
In this region lies the place a Schengen, which you may be familiar with because of the Schengen countries. This is where the foundation was laid for borderless travel within Europe. That is why you see the flags of the Schengen countries and the Nation Pillars of Column of Nations.
Each column has stars that represent a Schengen country, with symbols typical of that country on them. For example, on the Dutch column you see a clog. Many stars are still empty, because more countries may join in the future.
In the middle of the Moselle River you will also find the three-country point, where the almost invisible borders of Luxembourg, Germany and France meet. The exact point is marked by a buoy in the water. You have to look closely, but it is a symbol for this border location.
Also nice to visit is Chateau de Schengen. It has a special tower. It seems abandoned and is freely accessible. You can go all the way to the top, but not without a flashlight.
Activities
The region is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. Around Schengen there are several viewpoints on the hills, so you can take in the surroundings. The nice thing is that you can even cross different countries during a walk, without having to cover large distances. A popular walking route is 'Schengen Borderless', an 8,5 km long route (click here for more information).
Biodiverse
For nature lovers, the Biodiversum, just north of the centre of Schengen, is a nice place to visit. This can of course also be done during a walk or bike ride.
The Biodiversum is located on the lake of remerschen, in the nature reserve Haff Réimech, and functions as a nature conservation center. In this futuristic building you can discover everything about the biodiversity in the area. Especially for children it is a fun experience, thanks to the interactive way in which they learn about nature here.
The Mullerthal region
This region on the eastern border of Luxembourg is also called Little Switzerland. This is due to the hills, rocks, paths, caves, ravines and winding streams in the landscape. 11 municipalities in Mullerthal are part of the Nature & Geopark Mëllerdall. These therefore have a unique cultural, natural and geological heritage.
Activities
The Mullerthal region is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and mountain biking. With numerous hills and beautiful landscapes, there is plenty to explore. A recommended route (click here) which starts at the lake of EchternachThis route takes you along the lake, over green hills, through forests, past high rock formations, and through Echternach and other charming villages.
It is convenient that you start and end the route at the lake, a recreation center of about 30 hectares. So after your trip, you can recover here.
Tip: Rent your bikes at Youth Hostel Echternach and enjoy a meal in the restaurant after your ride The melting pot. For a reasonable price you get a delicious plate of food.
Budget tip: If you're traveling on a budget, the Youth Hostels in Luxembourg, including the one in Echternach, are excellent options for affordable overnight stay!
Echternach
Echternach is located on the river Sure. It is the oldest city in Luxembourg, and therefore has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The city is best known for its abbey and the St. Willibrordus BasilicaThe complex in combination with the courthouse gives a good impression of Echternach's past.
In addition, the city has an atmospheric and lively city center. Cozy squares full of cafes, restaurants and terraces surrounded by old and colorful half-timbered houses. It is wonderful to walk here and absorb the history and atmosphere. The city therefore attracts many visitors who come to taste the atmosphere and discover the beautiful surroundings.
Mullerthal Trail
De Mullerthal Trail stretches over no less than 112 km and takes you along the most beautiful places in the region. You walk through rock crevices, dense forests, valleys and along streams. The trail consists of three main routes and various additional tours, each with its own difficulty level and character. There is something for every type of walker. Do you want to walk one of the routes? Then choose your ideal path here and set here your planning together.
Berdorf
Berdorf is a small place, but the perfect base in the Müllerthal region. Berdorf is located on a plateau at an altitude of 400m overlooking valleys. From here you can start beautiful walks, cycle routes, car routes or do other outdoor activities. Near Berdorf you are quickly in the woods, where there are caves, rocks and therefore beautiful views.
Of course you can also have a nice stay in Berdorf. For example, stay overnight at Berdorfer Eck of Trail Inn. The latter is a nature and sports hotel. They offer special rates for families and groups, guided walks, suggestions for walking and cycling routes and also have a good kitchen. Even four-legged friends are welcome here!
Roadtrip type
When you go back to the Netherlands, take a small detour and experience some more of Luxembourg's beauty. For example, drive via Lipperscheid to the south, along the Sauer river to Ettelbruch and continue to Bourscheid and stop at a viewpoint along the way Castle Bourscheid.
If you still have the time and the inclination, you can continue your way on the small winding roads. If you have had enough, you will soon be on the main road to continue your way to the Netherlands.
