There are many beautiful hiking trails and places of interest in the vicinity of L'Estartit en Torrella de Montgri on the Costa Brava in Spain† The walking routes that I describe in this blog can often be done without a car, when you start from L'Estartit or Torroella de Montgri. Of course you can take the bus back to your starting point. So get off the beach and explore the beautiful surroundings!

Roca Maura viewing point

The Roca Maura viewing point (location here) you can walk partly via the road, but you can easily cut off a part and climb up via a path with rocks. It is quite steep and a bit unstable due to the loose stones, but once on top of the mountain you have a great view! Well worth it!

The Roca Maura is 225 meters high and from this height you can see L'Estartit, Els Griells, Pals, Escala, Roses and Torroella de Montgri.

The port of L'Estartit

The port Club Nàutic Estartit is a beautiful port. Nice to take a walk along the marina and view the luxury boats here. About 700 boats can moor in the harbor, with a boat length of between 4 and 25 meters. Of course there are also many eateries with a view of the harbor.

Thursday market L'Estartit

Every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 14 p.m. there is L'Estartit in the center (at the Spar) a market. At this market you will find clothes, bags, shoes, rugs, fabrics, toys, souvenirs, food and drinks. At the Spar in the street there is often a stall with delicious churros!

Passeig Milonet

At the very end of the harbor there is a lookout point towards Illes Medes. From here you have the best view of the Illes Medes from land. Want to get a closer look at the islands? Then rent a kayak, a boat or go on a snorkeling or diving trip!

Illes Medes is a marine reserve and is in the top 7 of the most beautiful national parks in Catalonia by National Geographic.

The trails run from the port of L'Estartit to the other side of town and even to Torroella de Montgri and L'Escala, depending on which path you choose. Walking here is definitely worth it!

Hiking from L'Estartit to Torroella de Montgri

It seems that there is a nice walking route along the river Ter which leads from L'Estartit to Torroella de Montgri (location here) go. This route is about 2 hours, of which half an hour on the beach and then an hour and a half along the river.

Note: this route is not recommended in autumn, because the plumes are so high along the river that you cannot see the river at all. Then an hour and a half between the plumes is a long time.

There is also a cycle path parallel to the main road to Torroella de Montgri. This is a great trail for a nice walk. It is about an hour from the center of L'Estartit to the center of Torroella de Montgri.

For EUR 1,75 per person you can take the bus back to the bus station in the middle of L'Estartit.

Montgri Castle

If you want to do a tough hike, the hike to Montgri Castle is great fun. The route starts in Torroella de Montgri and ends at Montgri Castle. It was quite a bit over gravel paths, stones and rocks, but after an hour you have a beautiful view from the castle! Here you can rest, relax and take some pictures. In about 45 minutes you walk back down via about the same route.
