Sweden cycling season opens | New cycling route Cykelleden Skåne

TRAVEL NEWS (Press release) 10 May 2023: On the international World Bicycle Day on June 3, 2023, the southern Swedish region of Skåne will open the new bicycle route Cykelleden Skåne. The new route consists of three stages. This will add 560 km of cycle route to the existing cycle network in one fell swoop. That cycling network in southern Sweden was not exactly small thanks to the 900 km cycling route of the South Sweden Trails. If you want to discover the south of Sweden, it is best to do so by bike. This part of Sweden is flat, vast and varied and therefore suitable for every cyclist. There is also a lot to pedal in the regions of Småland, Halland and Blekinge…

Cykelleden Skåne | New cycle route in 2023

The new cycle route Cycle members Skåne will be festively opened in Kristianstad on 3 June. This southern Swedish city is therefore also an important cycling hub in the new round through the Skåne region. The three routes run between Kristianstad and Ängelholm (174km), Ystad and Båstad (251km) and Lomma and Kristianstad (143km). This means that the Cykelleden can also be cycled as a full round. The route not only provides relaxed cycling pleasure, but the quality and safety of the routes have also been carefully considered. The well-signposted routes guide cyclists safely on cycle paths or country roads with little traffic – a plus especially for families with children.

Skåne is an ideal cycling region. The new cycle routes mainly lead cyclists through the surprising interior of Sweden's southernmost region. The border area with Denmark is full of history and so you cycle past numerous castles, old manor farms, nice villages with museums and farm shops. Part of the route near Kristianstad leads through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Vattenrike, rich in water, flora and fauna.

Another new route: the Hylteleden

A new cycle route will also be opened in the Halland region in May: the Hylte members. From the city center of Halmstad you cycle over a length of 180 km through the deep forests and along mirror-smooth lakes through the hinterland of this southern Swedish coastal region.

South Sweden Trails

Speaking of cycling in southern Sweden: with the South Sweden Trails the cycling range of southern Sweden is summarized in one fell swoop. The South Sweden Trails include more than 900 kilometers of cycling routes through the regions of Skåne, Småland, Blekinge and Halland. Here you cycle along the coastline, through the endless forests, via nice villages, large cities and the vast green interior. To conquer the South Sweden Trails – which consists of the separate cycling routes Kattegattleden, Sydostleden and Sydkustleden – you don't have to pedal all 900 kilometers. The various routes consist of separate (day) stages that can be cycled independently of each other.

MTB trails in Småland

MTB riders usually like a bit of action in nature. The north of Småland has the perfect conditions for this. In Jönköping you will find different routes where all challenges come together: height difference, winding paths and rugged nature. The area around Huskvarna Mountain – the highest point in the area – has been home to national, Scandinavian and European mountain bike championships over the years. Well-known champions such as Julien Absalon and Jolanda Neff rode these tracks. Long climbs, steep descents and difficult trails await adventurous mountain bikers. Also with Isaac Mountain Resort (with its own bike park) and Granna Mountain you will find many MBT options.

In the footsteps of Astrid Lindgren

If you say Sweden, you say Astrid Lindgren. The spirit mother of Pippi Longstocking, Ronja the Robber's Daughter and the Lionheart Brothers grew up in Småland. Get on your bike for the special cycling route "Cycling in the Movie Landscape of Småland", where you cycle past a number of filming locations from Astrid Lindgren's TV series. You start at the Filmbyn film museum in Mariannelund and then cycle past the places where the iconic series by Emil van de Hazelhoeve and De Kinder van Bolderburen were filmed. This is Småland through and through: the typical red houses, beautiful nature and in the footsteps of your own childhood heroes.

Tour of Åsnen by bike

Lake Åsnen in Småland is not exactly a small pool of water. It will then take you about four days to cycle around it, over a length of 140 km. But then you cycle at ease through a dream landscape of blue water, small green islands and the mighty nature of Åsnen National Park. The route starts in Avesta and you never lose sight of the lake along the way. The route is largely car-free. You can one total package books, consisting of accommodation and provisions for the journey. Bicycles can also be rented here.
