The village belongs to the province of South Holland Kinderdijk to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since we are not allowed to travel to other countries due to Covid 19, this was the perfect time to visit. In Kinderdijk you will find 19 mills 2 of which are open to the public. The mills were built from the end of the 15th century, but the mills that can be seen today in Kinderdijk, almost all date from 1738 in 1740 toy.

Function of the Kinderdijk windmills
The windmills used the power of the wind together with the pumping stations to move the water from the lower areas to higher areas. This ensured that agriculture was possible in Kinderdijk. They are the largest group of windmills in The Netherlands and are therefore in 1997 on the UNESCO World Heritage Listt added.
Visit windmills in Kinderdijk
Actually, it's outrageous that I had never been there as a 28-year-old. It's not just the windmills that make it worth a visit, the area is beautiful too! You can easily park your car at the entrance of Kinderdijk and then you can walk along the water, surrounded by windmills. If you have time, you can easily walk for 2 hours in this area.
Kinderdijk boat trip
Another option is to take the boat, but it was not operational due to the lockdown. Normally this boat trip takes 30 minutes and you sail slowly past the windmills.
Kinderdijk museum
There are 2 windmills that function as a museum. Both mills have ladders that allow you to climb all the way to the top. If you're lucky while the wheel is still spinning! You also have the opportunity to attend a workshop where a guide explains how the windmills are maintained.
Tickets for Kinderdijk
