Oman Oman is a country of contrasts: deserts and mountains, wadis and sea, sandy plains and green oases, tranquility and bustling souks. Many people associate Oman primarily with aridity and desert, but did you know you can also snorkel, hike, camp, and visit ancient villages here? In this article, I'll show you the most beautiful sights and experiences in Oman, divided into five themes to help you choose what you'd most like to explore. For each theme, I'll refer you to in-depth articles with more tips, photos, and examples, so you can get to know every part of Oman.
1. The desert
I'll start with the familiar image: vast sand dunes, a setting sun, and a campfire under the stars. For many travelers, this is the ultimate Oman feeling, and for good reason.
In Wahiba Sands Experience the desert at its finest. You can sleep on a blanket under the stars or spend the night in a small camp. During the day, you can climb dunes, admire sunrises, brave sandy paths in a 4x4, or visit a Bedouin area. Camels are still seen along the road here, and that's an impressive sight.
2. Wadis & oases: swimming in nature
One of Oman's most surprising aspects are its wadis. These green, water-filled gorges are an oasis of coolness and life in the arid landscape. They are not unique to Oman, but nowhere else in the world are they found. Middle East they are so numerous, so photogenic and so accessible to travelers.
You may be familiar with the image of turquoise pools among palm trees from photos, but did you know that Oman has dozens of them? From wide, easily accessible wadis like Wadi Bani Khalid, to more adventurous places like Wadi Shab en Wadi Tiwi, where you first have to walk or swim a bit. At Wadi Shab, we went a bit further than most others, so at one point we were completely alone...
Tip:: Each wadi has its own character, from peaceful and easily accessible to adventurous and rugged. In the article "6 special wadis in Oman' I will list the most beautiful ones for you, including practical tips and what you can expect on site.
3. Culture & history: the real Oman
When you think of Oman, you might first think of sand dunes and nature, but culture and history are everywhere, in the grand mosques and the small mountain villages. Most travelers start in the capital. Muscat, where you can see highlights such as the Grand Mosque. Then Al Alam Palace and the Muttrah Souk you can't miss.
After that is Nizwa The place to be for anyone who wants to experience the cultural heart of Oman. With its historic fort, charming old town, lively market, and the famous Friday morning goat market, this is perhaps the most photogenic and characterful city in the country.
Also Speaking on, a charming coastal town, shows you a different side of Oman: that of traditional dhow construction, fishing boats, and quiet village streets. And between all these towns, you'll encounter castles, mud houses, and ancient forts. Think Bahla (UNESCO World Heritage), Jabrin, or the villages around Al-HamraThese are places that effortlessly take you back in time.

4. Mountains & canyons: Oman at high altitude
Driving inland towards the west, you'll soon encounter a completely different Oman: rugged mountains, deep gorges, and fresh mountain air. It's a side of the country you might not immediately think of, but one that adventurers shouldn't miss.
Here you will find, among other things, the impressive Jabal Shams en Jabal Akhdar, places where you can hike and stay overnight among rocky peaks, precipices, and viewpoints that will take your breath away. Canyoning, off-roading on steep mountain roads, and hiking through deserted mountain villages: it's all possible here. Not for those with a fear of heights, but certainly for those who want to experience Oman at its wildest.

5. Out to sea: snorkeling, diving and coastal life
Oman borders both the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, offering hundreds of kilometers of coastline. Here and there, there are rocky bays, and elsewhere, expansive sandy beaches. The coast near Muscat is already beautiful, but the further south you travel, the more tranquil and impressive the landscape becomes.
A special experience is snorkeling or diving at the Daymaniyat Islands: a protected nature reserve off the coast of Muscat. You'll swim among colorful coral, schools of fish, and often turtles. The underwater world here is just as impressive as the one above.
The coastal regions ultimately convinced me to travel to Oman – I didn't want to miss out on the sun, sea, and diving opportunities. When I discovered Oman had it all, I immediately booked a ticket.

Would you like to see sea turtles? You can do so at several locations along the Omani coast, often simply while snorkeling or from a boat. This means you're not dependent on Ras al Jinz, where tourism at the nesting beaches can sometimes compromise the animals' peace and quiet.
For a truly unspoiled nature experience, Bar Al Hikman A place to remember. This remote peninsula nestles between desert, lagoons, and the open sea, teeming with marine life and birdlife. You'll need a 4x4—and the drive through the loose sand is not for the faint of heart—but once there, you can camp by the water or stay in a simple lodge surrounded only by flamingos, dolphins, and endless silence.
