Congo is officially known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country has a coastline of 40 kilometers on the Atlantic Ocean, but is otherwise landlocked. It is the second largest country in the continent; only Algeria is bigger.

The capital, Kinshasa, is located on the Congo River, approximately 515 km from the mouth of the river. It is the largest city in Central Africa and serves as the country's official administrative, economic and cultural center.

Congo is rich in natural resources. It features huge deposits of industrial diamonds, cobalt and copper; one of the largest forest reserves in Africa; and about half of the continent's hydroelectric potential.

Lush rainforests, majestic rivers, volcanoes, chimpanzee shelters and friendly locals await tourists in Congo. Unfortunately, they will have to wait a little longer, because there is an unstable security situation and a high risk of kidnapping.
