To put an end to all confusion, the Maldives or the Maldives: both names are good. Officially, this archipelago is called the Republic of the Maldives. The Maldives consist of no less than 1190 coral islands, which are divided into 26 atolls. The islands are located in the Indian Ocean southwest of India. The Maldives therefore belong to the Asian continent. The archipelago is best known for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear blue sea water. Lying in a hammock in the Maldives with a cocktail in hand: it is a dream of many people. It is not without reason that the Maldives are the number one dream location when it comes to honeymoons.

Head to the Maldives for its famous mini-islands, which provide fabulous views both underwater and above water. Underwater, the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Sea dwarf the Maldives. Above water it may be a bit monotonous: you have to make do with the snow-white beaches, the turquoise sea, the rustling palm trees and the buffet of the island on which you are staying. Almost all islands are small and can just accommodate your 'resort'. The islands, which also contain villages of the local population, were kept out of tourism until recently. Since 2012, tourists have also been allowed to visit the inhabited islands and more and more small guesthouses are popping up where you can stay at reasonably affordable prices.

The Mosque of Male

The main religion in the Maldives is Sunni. This is especially evident in the capital Malé. The main attraction of this pleasant city is the large mosque. You will also see smoky tea houses everywhere where the locals spend their afternoons and evenings. Traditional fish and fruit markets are an everyday sight in this city of 75.000 inhabitants.

Diving in the Maldives

If you travel to the Maldives, a dive is almost an obligation. The underwater world here is fantastic. Make sure you end up on an island with a so-called 'house reef' so that you can snorkel directly between turtles from your bamboo hut and do not always have to go with a boat. Swim with strange fish as you meander past gems of coral. Have you ever seen a pennant or grouper? I do not think so! And if you are not married yet, you can say yes to each other here underwater!
