THailand has become one of the most popular travel destinations in recent years. We, Dutch people, love to take the plane to travel to the metropolis of Bangkok, the wonderful beaches and the rugged jungle. Thailand is known for its friendly residents and fascinating culture and is also dirt cheap once you get there. The country has an immense number of sights that you would most like to see. Since that is impossible – unless you have to plan a holiday for a year – we have listed the top 10 must-sees in Thailand for you.

1 - Bangkok

Once arrived in Thailand you actually fall right in the middle of the butter. Because arriving in Bangkok is simply overwhelming. The crowds and pleasant chaos may mislead you at first, but once you have acclimatized you will see that Bangkok is a city with many pearls. Cruising around in tuk-tuks you pass the beautiful Royal Palace, which is full of glittering splendor. The dozens of temples are all equally beautiful. Be sure to visit the Buddhist temples of Wat Arum and Wat Phra Kaew, even if you don't feel the need for some soul searching. Wat Phra Kaew is home to the world famous Emerald Buddha. Chinatown – the largest in the world – is an experience in itself. Delicious food at the local stalls on the street, haggle at the bustling markets, it's Bangkok through and through. Be sure to stroll down Khao San Road, Bangkok's favorite backpacker street.

2 – Diving at Similan National Park

The islands of the Similan National Park are located south of Thailand in the Adaman Sea. These islands are among the favorite destinations of divers around the world mainly because of the frequent sightings of giant whale sharks. In this beautiful marine reserve are nine islands nestled in a jagged environment of limestone peaks. The vibrant underwater world is a beautiful sight. You also get the chance to discover a new universe while snorkeling. Ready to dive? Then take the time to relax on the heavenly sandy beaches. Don't forget to take pictures, because the pictures on these islands are enviable for many.

3 – Chiang Mai | Jungle Trekking & Night Bazaar

From Bangkok you take the night train to the green north of Thailand, to Chiang Mai to be precise. Here, close to the border of Myanmar, you will find the dense jungle, complete with waterfalls, buzzing mosquitoes and strenuous hikes. In Chiang Mai you can book a jungle tour of two or three days. The jungles of Thailand are full of surprises. Walking on narrow paths and rocks you will discover beautiful nature. At night you will spend the night in small jungle villages where you will be served an amazingly delicious meal. The second day you go rafting up the river, to paddle from churning water to serene riverbeds. If that's not a must do, I don't know what is! Fascinating are the Padaung, a jungle-dwelling tribe known for their neck rings.

We will stay in Chiang Mai for a while. Because this pleasant city has much more to offer than the nearby jungle treks. Chiang Mai is a lot quieter and that is precisely why for many travelers a relief after the turbulent chaos in Bangkok. Once in Chiang Mai you should definitely stop by the night market. The cheerful stalls are set up in the afternoon and as soon as darkness falls, all you see is the colorful lights of the lively night market. Known as the Night Bazaar, the market offers not only imitation brands, but also special Thai souvenirs. Think of wood carvings, handmade dolls and jewelry. The pleasant and relaxed atmosphere is characteristic of Chiang Mai's special night market. Tired feet? Then enjoy a wonderful foot massage in the open air.

4 – Koh Phi Phic

The island of Koh Phi Phi is one of the pearls of Thailand. The name Koh Phi Phi actually belongs to a group of six islands, but we are mainly talking about the specific island. The beautiful white beaches and the absurdly clear water make this beautiful place a very popular destination. Koh Phi Phi is located south of Thailand in the Andaman Sea and fortunately has retained much of its natural beauty. Especially backpackers look for this stunning island, to party hard in the evening and enjoy the paradisiacal beaches and the warm blue water the next day. Koh Phangan is a unique island north of Koh Samui. The island is best known for its exciting Full Moon Parties. For many years backpackers have come to Koh Phangan to party during these lavish evenings. If you want to swing along on the beach, make sure you book in time because the Full Moon Parties are very popular. Party hard with a nightly dip in the warm sea as the final piece, that's Koh Phangan. Are you on the island but there is no full moon in sight? No problem, just go to a blast during the Half Moon Parties. Ready to party? Then you can of course relax the day after, stretching out on the sun-drenched beaches. In addition, you are lucky that the diving island of Koh Tao is just around the corner. This beautiful spot is a true mecca for divers. The deep sea life here is phenomenal, the visibility under water is crystal clear.

6 – Krabi

Beautiful limestone rocks, sea caves, waterfalls and the typical Thai beaches, that's Krabi. This coastal town in western Thailand is definitely worth a visit. Its versatility in particular makes Krabi a very popular place for travelers, both young and old. Nice boat trips to the many islands in the vicinity of Krabi, rock climbing, diving and snorkeling or lazing on the beach of Ao Nang, every day is a party. In the evening you can eat well at the many top restaurants or walk through the night market to score nice clothes or souvenirs. Also nice is a trip with a longtail boat that takes you to the mangroves of Krabi.

7 – Khao Sok National Park

The Khao Sok National Park is a beautiful park with an ancient rainforest, roaring waterfalls, limestone formations and very diverse wildlife. An overnight stay in this park is especially a very special experience. In the morning you can hear the jungle awaken and see the chained monkeys swinging through the trees. Khao Sok has limestone formations that shoot 900 meters into the air. If you look closely, you will discover hidden valleys and dark caves. Take the time to unravel the secrets of this jungle, you will be amazed at what nature has to offer you here.

Time for some culture and history. During World War II, thousands of POWs worked on the Burma Railway. The track was given the obscure name 'Death Railway', because nearly 100.000 Asians and prisoners died during construction. Three kilometers from the town of Kanchanaburi is the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, here the railway runs over the River Kwai Yai, a tributary of the Mae Klong. The history of the bridge and the railway in particular make this place an emotionally charged but also fascinating destination. Kanchanaburi's museums and honorary cemeteries will not leave you unmoved when history speaks to you from the past.

9 – Sop Ruak | golden triangle

Sop Ruak is located in the northeast of Thailand. This place has become known as the three-country point of Thailand. But Sop Ruak owes its fame mainly as the center of the infamous Golden Triangle. This Golden Triangle was an area stretching from Thailand to Myanmar en Laos and notorious for the production and smuggling of opium. Sop Ruak is surrounded by the Mekong River and Nam Ruak River. The two rivers come together exactly in Sop Ruak, which results in a beautiful spectacle. Many longtail boats float in the water that can take you across the water to the wooded border areas. Be sure to visit Chiang Saen, one of the oldest cities in Thailand. Here, in Chiang Saen, stands one of the largest temples in Thailand: Wat Phra That Chedi Luang.

10 – Sukhothai

The town of Sukhothai and the eponymous national park are both known for their historical heritage. You will find beautiful temples here, often in good condition. The most beautiful temple is undoubtedly Mahathat. Especially the unique architecture of the ruins and buildings immediately stands out. For example, rent a bicycle and explore the temples, palaces and their beautiful surroundings. The city S used to be the first of ancient Siam and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We now know why and that's why we put it at number 1 on the list of must-sees in Thailand!
