What is a Digital Nomad?

A Digital Nomad is someone who can work location independently via the internet.

A Digital Nomad is someone who can live 'nomadic'; wherever! And because of this, travel can play a big part in this person's life.

So a lot of traveling, but still working. That suits me. Let me introduce myself: I am 44 years old, mother of two children. Daughter Djenn (19) and son Leff(13). I have a relationship with Ronald (49) and we travel in a converted DHL truck.

As we speak we just got back from 7 months Europe with our camper, my son and our two dogs Obi and Woody.

My company: NoMadness In My Bus

With my company I create personal and tailor-made business concepts for people who want to combine travel and work. I guide them from idea to profitability.

But I haven't always been a Digital Nomad. I would like to tell you my way to location independence: from 50 employees to just a laptop.

I was 26 years old: employed a man, a child and 50 women. That last one was hell. My 'lowest point' in life. Of course: all 50 were lovely women. They went out of their way to keep our 5 children's clothing and children's shoe stores running smoothly. But how I hated it: I had become a 'manager' instead of the contact with the customers, which I liked so much.

We were right, my ex and I. We had a beautiful life; Both drove a nice car and my daughter of 1 had, logically, the most beautiful clothes and shoes.

But I wasn't happy.

I wanted more freedom in my life

I wanted to spread my wings and suspected that it would be a long way to my 100th year of life.

After some consultation with my ex, we knew what to do: we would sell the stores and emigrate to Spain. Selling those stores was not without a struggle: it resulted in stress and powerlessness.

And money. But above all: freedom. I felt free to go again where I wanted.

That was not Spain. At that time there was a crisis and people were not very open to immigrants. Logically yes. I was going to sell a Dutch bag brand in Spain and a Spanish sunglasses brand in the Netherlands.

I flew to Spain once every 15 years: how free I felt. When I was gone. Not when I was home. And so I realized that more had to be done: I decided that my marriage had to come to an end: it was over.

In the meantime, I was building my business from a passion: I had become a Personal Trainer and had opened my own studio. Crazy!! I found a rental house for my (now) two kids, my dog and myself. That was in 2015.

Travel through Europe in a camper van

I decided that I was going to 'travel Europe on a bus'.

Ever.

Everyone I told this to raised their eyebrows: 'Yeah true…. Just keep on dreaming….'. You saw them think.

In the meantime, I happily continued to make plans. In 2020 I would be location independent. And so it happened. My Personal Training clients insisted that I rent the property for another year; so they could still train while I was in the country. I did that under strict agreements: I wasn't going to do any 'business' here anymore.

My focus was completely on NoMadness In My Bus: I was going to travel. I'm dating myself, those years. Never with the aim of going 'somewhere'. I often opened my conversation with 'I'm going to travel in Europe on a bus'; then a lot fell off.

In April 2018, out of boredom, I was on Tinder again. Ronald had 'liked' me and we had a match. I said to my best friend, 'I'm going to date him again or else I'll break up for the rest of the year.

1 date was enough. Ronald and I clicked like crazy.

Living the Digital Nomad life together

And he wanted to travel with me; in about five years. Within two months we bought our Dream House on wheels: the former DHL truck Oliver. (Check here the interior of this special camper.) In 2020 I thought we could leave earlier; February 2021 for example….

Ronald thought: 'she is crazy'.

Ronald said: 'Good idea!'

And so my plan was adjusted and I had to work 'extra'. Working hard to achieve our goal. And then the time had come: we went on a journey with my 13-year-old son and two dogs, with a good income and perspective.

During Corona. Couldn't be more uncertain. And not freer either. The best choice I ever made. I couldn't have felt more free than 100 Range Rovers. I just need my laptop now and have no worries.

When you feel that it has to be different…

When you 'feel' that it has to be 'different' for you: go for it!! It's so worth it!! I promise!! We will continue to make our own choices for the time being when we want to move and travel. I will put you in the blogs on Wereldreizigers.nl regularly 'include' in the life of a location independent entrepreneur; a Digital Nomad.
