Must-sees in New York

1. Empire State Building

One of the most recognizable buildings in New York is the enormous Empire State Building. With its 381 meters it towers high above the other skyscrapers. The 1931 building was even the tallest building in the world for a long time! If you're in the area, you really need to go up to one of the two observation platforms on the 86th and 102nd floors. From here you have a truly fantastic view over the skyline of the city.

2.Central Park

Central Park is arguably the most famous park in the world. Every year, five times more visitors come here than at the Grand Canyon. The park measures 1 by 4 kilometers and forms a huge green zone in the middle of the skyscrapers and urban development of Manhattan.

3 Times Square

Times Square has to be one of the most famous squares in the world. Every day thousands of people visit the gigantic advertising screens on which the biggest brands advertise.

The square was actually called Longacre Square, but since the headquarters of the New York Times newspaper was established there, it has been called Times Square. You should definitely not miss the square as photos and videos fail to convey the magic of the place.

4. Shopping in New York

There's no getting around it, this exciting metropolis easily beats the other cities when it comes to shopability. All top brands and established names can be found here within walking distance of each other in the beating heart of the city, Manhattan. New York never disappoints. In this unlimited shopping mecca you can often shop duty-free, both affordable and more luxurious than luxury. Stroll through one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world: Fifth Avenue. Here you will find the most exclusive brands at chic boutiques. Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Versace, they are all there. Is your budget not infinite? Then go to Macy's or visit the Annex Flea Market on Times Square. Are you more of the gadgets? Then you can't miss the gigantic Apple Store! New York never sleeps, not even for the seasoned shopper.

5. 9/11 Memorial Park

The attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 are etched in everyone's memory. Nearly 3000 people were killed at that time. Today, where the towers stood, you will find two special fountains. The names of all the fatalities are engraved on the rims of the fountains. This place commemorates an important part of the city's history and you should therefore absolutely not ignore the monument.

In addition to the fountains, the new One World Trade Center was erected, the highest skyscraper in New York. You can visit the building and go to the observation deck from where you have an impressive view of Manhattan. The World Trade Center and the September 11 Memorial are located between West St, Church St, Fulton St and Liberty St.

6.Grand Central Station

New York Central Station has been the setting for several famous movie scenes. Many dramatic farewell scenes or romantic reunions were filmed here. We therefore definitely recommend that you visit the building.

The station is quite large, but the main hall is easy to find. Don't forget to look up at the constellations on the ceiling. Grand Central Station is located at E 42nd St and Park Avenue.

7. Statue of Liberty

Of course, no visit to New York is complete without a look at the iconic Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island. Not only the symbol of New York, but of the whole of the United States. Nearby Ellis Island was the gateway to America in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the Statue of Liberty was pretty much the first thing migrants saw from the country.

To visit the Statue of Liberty you have to take the ferry from Lower Manhattan. It is advisable to buy tickets in advance when you actually want to enter the monument, because they are often sold out. Don't feel like, time or money for an extensive tour? The ferry to Staten Island is free and practically passes by. From the boat you have a nice view of Liberty Island and the Manhattan skyline. There and back takes about an hour and a half.

8. Chinatown

In Chinatown you imagine yourself in a random backstreet in Shanghai. Elderly Chinese men play Mahjong outside on the street and the street scene is dominated by cozy eateries and shops full of oriental products. A special sensation, and all the more fun it is to walk around here and have a bite to eat. But beware, you might just come home with a can of Chinese tea or an ever-wavering lucky cat.

9. HighLine

This special urban park was only opened in 2009 after it was decided to convert the old train line near Chelsea into a beautiful park. The line was used to transport goods until the 34s, but after that it fell into disrepair. Now you can walk through the park daily, try to find the old tracks between the greenery and above all enjoy the view over the city and the water. The High Line runs from Gansevoort Street and Washington Street to W 11th St between 12th and 07th Avenues. The park is open almost daily between 00:22 and 00:XNUMX.

10.Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge over the East River is New York City's most famous bridge. The bridge, which connects Park Row in Manhattan to Brooklyn, is one of the most beautiful spots in the city. The bridge dates from 1883 and was built with stone arches and steel frames.

The Booklyn Bridge consists of two floors. Cars drive on the lower part and walkers and cyclists can cross the river on the upper part. The bridge is almost two kilometers long and offers impressive views of the New York skyline. So be sure to walk over it!
