1. Introduction | Why for world travelers?

You are on vacation or on the road during your world trip and whoops, your phone or camera memory is full. What now? Until recently, you could plan a night off to free up your memory. Spend an evening making backups on different SD cards, cumbersome and slow external hard drives or uploading everything to the cloud (on weak hotel WiFi) for hours and sometimes even days before you can safely remove it from your devices. Who else is looking forward to that?

The long wait and hours of making Backups, is fortunately now a thing of the past. The new SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSDs, as they are called in full, are so fast and good, they exceeded all my expectations during testing. In this article I will explain why these SSDs are an absolute must for content creators and anyone who enjoys photography and videography in combination with (world) travel.

2.Unboxing

What's in the box? It's a small box. It weighs almost nothing so I was curious to see what I would find. The box contains a quick guide, the SSD and 2 USB cables (1x USB-C to USB and 1x USB-C to USB-C). I placed a debit card in between for reference so you can see how compact the SSD really is.

4. For demanding content creators

This SSD does more than you would expect and is therefore particularly suitable for travelers and content creators who need real performance. The SSD is so incredibly fast! According to the manufacturer, the maximum speed remains just under 2 GB per second (!) for reading data. Data can be written at up to 1050 MB/s. These are unprecedented speeds and SanDisk is leaving the competition far behind for the time being.

Of course I also wanted to try to reach these speeds in the tests, so I went to work in good spirits. However, during testing, I quickly learned that no device or gadget I own could give the SSD any kind of difficulty. wow!

5. Tests and results

A brand new high-end Smartphone, a last generation Chromebook, a new pro-sumer DJI drone, nothing came close to the maximum speed. The only device with which I was able to achieve speeds higher than 500 MB/sec was my 2021 PC workstation, which has quite a bit of power. I achieved a speed of about 850 MB/s with the workstation – a speed I had never achieved before.

It should be clear that we are talking about a high-end product for demanding users and content creators. A product that is ready for the future.

Update 20 September 2023: I recently built a new PC with an internal M.2 Pro SSD from Samsung that can write up to 7GB per second. I ran the test on this again and indeed, the 1050 MB per second was indeed achieved with ease, exactly as the specified speed from the factory. I also bought the new Sandisk, which promises 2000 MB/s, which the SSD also achieves with the greatest of ease.

4K movie copy smartphone

My Huawei P30 pro smartphone, which can really be called a high-end smartphone, got stuck at 500 MB/s when copying a 4k HDR movie. That in itself is quite an achievement! The film of more than 40 Gigabytes was captured 1,5 minute copy from the SSD to the phone. That too was a new record, by far!

Update 20 September 2023: The test was carried out again with a Google Pixel 7. This achieved 1050 MB/s without any difficulty.

Making backups from smartphone

The next test was copying several large video files that I had previously copied from my Fuji mirrorless camera and DJI Mavic Air 2 drone to the phone for editing. While making the backup – copying to the SanDisk Extreme For Portable SSD – the device in combination with the Huawei P30 pro also reached about 500 MB/s. It didn't take long at all 7 minutes to copy nearly 200 GB of photo and video files to the SSD. I was impressed!

In practice, this simply means that while traveling – whether you're standing on top of a volcano or quietly drinking a cup of coffee on the terrace – you can free up space on your devices in minutes by backing up to the SanDisk SSD. .

When I did the same trick on my new Chromebook, the speeds also stalled at around 550 MB/s. I think that for the maximum speed of 1050 MB/s you really need a high-end workstation or one of the latest Apple computers, and that says a lot about this product.

6. Extremely compact

A good SSD is one that you actually have with you. As you can see from the pictures, the SSD is extremely compact – the SanDisk Extreme For Portable SSD just fits in my wallet! With its compact size and thickness of about a centimeter, you can even keep it with your debit cards. The size and weight are of course extremely important, especially for travelers. While travelling, every gram is one too many and the super-compact design and weight of only 79 grams there is no more reason to leave it at home or leave it in your hotel room.

7. Strong and IP55 rating

De SanDisk Extreme For Portable SSD is built on a solid piece of aluminum and is finished with impact-resistant rubber. The SSD can therefore take a beating and with the IP55 classification it is also dust and splash-proof. This is a nice thought if you take the SSD with you during a long hike on a mountain or if you go deep into the jungle. Heavy rainfall, humidity and cold cannot be ruled out at times like this and it's nice to know that your SSD can at least withstand that and your files are safe.

8. Conclusion

Update 20 September 2023: A year ago I tested the first generation of this product, at the time I actually thought it couldn't get any faster. With the 2nd generation, the speed has almost doubled to 2000 MB/s, something I previously did not think possible. You can copy 100 Gigabytes of drone images at this speed in just 50 seconds! After a year of use, working with these SSDs has really proven to be a relief and I can't imagine it has ever been any different.

Fortunately, they have kept the robust design identical with the new V2 variants. The device looks great, is super strong and can withstand knocks and moisture. As far as I'm concerned, the SanDisk Extreme For Portable SSD (here available) an award-winning product. SanDisk's competition is left behind, at the moment nothing actually comes close.

The only downside is the price. It is a high-end product and of course that comes with a price tag. For that price you get a lot of value for your money standard 5 year manufacturer's warranty† This means that SanDisk also has great confidence in the robustness and quality of the product.

In any case, after a year of intensive use, I am extremely satisfied. Now you.
