TRAVEL NEWS – 05 February 2021: At least 60 hotels in Bali are currently up for sale due to the continued decline in occupancy rates, as the province is reported to be incurring about IDR 10 trillion (+- EUR 640 million) monthly losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rai Suryawijaya, head of the Badung branch of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), said the number of hotels being sold continues to rise.
“Because the occupancy rate is very low (only between five and seven percent), hotel owners cannot pay their debts to the bank. While there has been some relief in the charges, they still have to pay,” said Suryawijaya.
Major losses tourist industry in Bali
Bali's tourism industry has lost up to IDR 10 trillion a month since the start of the pandemic, the Tourism Bureau said this week, and many businesses are struggling to survive alongside official efforts to address the public health crisis.
“The numbers will rise. There is a good chance that if the COVID-19 pandemic lasts longer, many will go bankrupt," Suryawijaya said.
