Malaysia considers tougher laws and tougher penalties against LGBT

TRAVEL NEWS – January 19, 2021: The government in Malaysia do not rule out the possibility of amending the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 or Act 355 to provide for tougher penalties against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Until recently, Malaysia was a fairly progressive one where not much was allowed, but hardly enforced. Malaysia is a country where LGBTs compared to neighboring countries such as Indonesia fairly tolerant with the LGBT community. There is a kind of tolerance policy, as we also know in the Netherlands with the sale of weed. Unfortunately, that now seems to be changing. This comes as a slap in the face to the LGBT community in Malaysia.

Severe punishments for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said the current sentence under the law, which provides for a prison term of three years, a fine of RM5.000 and six lashes with the cane, did not have much effect on the group of people.

This amendment should be seen as necessary to address their "misdeeds," he told reporters after the transfer of the food bank by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department in Kompleks Purnama near Pengkalan Chepa, here today.

According to him, strict action has been taken against those who do not dress according to their gender.

“All religious institutions and state enforcers have been ordered to take action against those (LGBT) who do not behave accordingly,” he said.

He urged the public with information about unhealthy activities of the LGBT group to come forward and report to the authorities to facilitate action against them.
