Sights Lüderitz

If you drive north from Oranjemund, the road is on the left for 125 kilometers restricted area and on the right the Namib-Naukluft desert, you arrive in the town Lüderitz. Located directly on the Atlantic Ocean, this old fishing village with many German buildings is not often visited by tourists.

There are many pastel-colored houses around the center. The mornings are often foggy due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, but in the afternoon the sun comes out and it becomes pleasantly warmer. The harbor area has been rebuilt and looks modern with nice restaurants to eat. Furthermore, the city is not really aimed at tourists. Fortunately, there is plenty to do near Lüderitz.

1. Lüderitz Peninsula

A few kilometers outside Lüderitz is the Peninsula. This area located on the Atlantic Ocean is very rugged and full of animals. To have a beautiful view of the city of Lüderitz, go to Griffith Bay† Continue to Diaz Point, here in 1488 the first European came ashore. Here is a camping site and a small restaurant. The rocks nearby are inhabited by fur seals and seals.

2. Halifax Island / Penguin Island

Continue to Halifax Island (Location here). The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Lüderitz. A large African penguin colony lives on this island. This can be seen from shore with binoculars or a zoom lens. If you want to get closer, you should book a boat cruise where you can get closer to the island.

3. Grosse Bucht

There are more nice places you can go for a short stop. For example the Gross Bucht, here it is a paradise for windsurfers and kiteboarders. The conditions are perfect with especially a lot of wind.

From Lüderitz there is the possibility to do excursions into the Sperrgebiet where, among other things, several diamond mines are still in operation. Also take a look at the beautiful Bogenfels which lies slightly south of Lüderitz in the Sperrgebiet.

4. Agate Beach

For those who seek natural beauty, it is Agate Beach (Location here) a must-visit. This secluded beach, about 20 kilometers from Lüderitz, is known for its abundance of agate stones found on its shoreline. The mix of colors and patterns in these semi-precious stones makes the beach a unique place. It's a great location for peaceful walks along the ocean and collecting beautiful agate stones as a reminder of your trip.

5. Eat at The Portuguese Fisherman

The Portuguese Fisherman (Location here) is a well-known restaurant in Lüderitz. As the name suggests, this restaurant is run by a Portuguese fisherman. You are served fresh fish here every day. You can sit outside on the large terrace, or inside when the weather does not permit sitting outside. Don't miss a visit to this restaurant during your visit to Lüderitz!

6. Shark Island

Shark Island (Location here), located in the harbor of Lüderitz, not only offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding coastline, but also has an interesting history. Originally used as a detention camp during the Namibian uprising against German colonial rule, it is now a peaceful place with picnic facilities and walking trails. It's a great place to enjoy a relaxing afternoon picnic while taking in the views of the ocean and nearby islands.
