Winter sports

Skiing on a glacier. Is that possible? Of course! There are even 40 of them worldwide that you can ski on. This variant is one of the largest, with 110 kilometers of slopes. In addition, this ski area has a lot of variety. From easy slopes for beginners to several challenging descents.

The ski area is located in the Stubai Alps and is easily accessible by car. There is also a bus connection back and forth. We stayed at a campsite nearby. Here we received a ticket that allowed us to travel by bus for free during our entire stay. This was very nice!

Snowboard lessons

We were here from December 5 to 13, so it was still nice and quiet. Bee Ski & Snowboard School Neustift Olympia I booked snowboard lessons for myself. I opted for a 4-hour group lesson in one day. The day before I had to go to the ski school to see what materials I would need. On the day itself I took the free bus and bought a ski pass at the bottom of the ski lift that gave me access to the ski area and could use the gondolas.

I went to the meeting point on top of the mountain and it turned out that I was the only one. So I got private lessons for 4 hours! This was very pleasant because I had little or no experience and basically still had to learn everything. The ski instructor was very nice and skilled. He had a lot of patience, had a positive attitude and spoke good English. At the end of the day I had made a lot of progress. It was a fantastic experience! But one with a price tag…

Costs for winter sports

Below I have listed all the costs for one person:

€80 for 4 hours of lessons (group lesson)

€27 for rental of snowboard, shoes, helmet and ski goggles (for 1 day)

€65 for ski pass and gondolas (valid for 1 day)

€53 for purchase of equipment (ski socks and scarf)

€20 for a simple lunch

In total I gave € 245, - out for a day of snowboarding.

It costs a lot of money, but you get a great experience in return. And if you buy a ski pass for several days and do not book additional lessons, the price per day will ultimately be cheaper.

Sleighing

Another fun experience and cheaper option is sledding. We bought a bright pink sled in the village for about €10 and used the cross-country skiing route past the campsite. Here were the highest and most hills. It was hilarious to do and we felt like a kid again! Highly recommended! You can enjoy yourself for an afternoon here. You can of course also take this sled up to the glacier. Please note that in this case you must purchase a ski pass.

Typical Austrian dishes

Austrians love good food. In addition, you actually get what is indicated on the menu. A schnitzel with fries is really a schnitzel with fries. No garnish, no lettuce, no sauce. Okay, you only get the lemon extra.

Below the four best known (and tastiest) dishes from Austria:

- Wiener Schnitzel with Pommes; a large schnitzel with fries (and a lemon).

- Kâsespätzle; this is a kind of pasta with onion and lots of cheese.

- Currywurst with pommes; a bratwurst with traditional curry sauce.

- Grostl; this dish consists of fried potatoes, onion, meat and a fried egg.

Be sure to try them out when you are in Austria!

Neustift

The municipality Neustift (Location here) is an excellent base for winter sports enthusiasts. There are numerous hotels and apartments where you can stay. There are also a number of campsites for the winter campers among us. There are also many restaurants and bars for après skiing. In short, a real ski resort!

Residence

We stayed with our caravan Camping Edelweiss (Location here) in the town Volderau for €38,10 per night. We had a great place with electricity for this. The sanitary facilities were very clean and the showers were nice and warm. We paid extra to use the washing machine and dryer. There is also a restaurant that serves very tasty food. The only disadvantage? The owner was very unfriendly and treated us inferiorly. This really bothered us, but because everything else was very good and we were close to the glacier, we still chose to stay.

There was a lot of snow when we were there! More than normal at this time of year. We of course enjoyed this immensely and have only experienced it as positive!

As I already indicated, in addition to campsites, there are also many hotels and apartments available in this area. Pension Terra (click here) is a good option. For a week you pay around €850 for two people. If you want something cheaper, choose Haus Wulfenia (click here). For €800 you have an entire apartment where you can cook for yourself. In addition, you can use a Finnish sauna in winter and have free access to the local public indoor swimming pool in summer.

The best travel time

You can enjoy winter sports here from October to June. Outside this season it is still wonderful to visit this area, but then you have to count on other activities. Think of: walking, hiking, tobogganing and mountain biking. For the adrenaline fans among us, you can climb steep rock walls, go rafting or paraglide. The weather here in summer is often beautiful, around 25 degrees. Austria is therefore certainly suitable to visit outside the winter season.

How do you get there?

From Utrecht it is approximately 9,5 hours' drive. Of course you can also book a flight. In this case you fly to Innsbruck, from where it is still a half-hour drive. There is a free bus connection in the winter sports area, provided you actually stay here. So it is a personal decision whether you prefer to go with your own car or by plane.

Innsbruck

From Nose stick it is about a 30 kilometer drive to Innsbruck (Location here). This medieval and colorful city is located on the beautiful River Inn. In winter there are several Christmas markets throughout the city and the atmosphere is great. Everywhere is nicely decorated and you can buy delicacies in almost every street.

It is not a big city and according to the residents themselves it is more of a village. You also get this feeling when you walk around here. One day gives you enough time to discover the city.

Hello Italy!

From our stay it was about a half hour drive to the border with Italy. In that case we couldn't skip a trip! And the best part? We drove via the old fashioned way Brenner Pass (Location here). Does this sound familiar?

'With the flame in the pipe, I tear through the Brenner Pass. With my thirty tons of diesel, far from home but at ease' is a well-known trucker's song sung by Henk Wijngaard.

Of course this song blared through our speakers. There are two options: the old route and the new (highway). The new variant is a beautiful highway through the mountains for which you have to pay tolls. The old route consists of winding roads through the mountains, without tolls. We chose to drive the latter.

It was an incredibly beautiful route and once we arrived in Italy we drove through the snowy mountains and saw beautiful views. And of course we ate real Italian: pizza, pasta, gelato and an espresso. Delicious!

Tip: Would you also like to drive over the old Brenner Pass? Then check the 'avoid toll roads' option on Google Maps. Then you will automatically be sent through the right route.

Once we had built a solid foundation and had a plan for the future, life intervened. After a serious scooter accident, our eyes were opened and we decided to get the most out of life and pursue our big dream: travelling. We have sold everything and have been traveling with our two cats since the end of 2022, so far we have been in the Netherlands for 4 months a year to work. In the meantime, we are looking into how traveling remains financially feasible so that we can enjoy it for a long time to come!
