6x particularly delicious food and drinks in the best restaurants

1. Madeira wine

I can tell you from my own experience that Madeira wine is unique. It is not a normal wine as we know it in the Netherlands and it is not like Port wine either. Madeira wine really has a unique taste that I can't compare to anything else. So you will have to taste it yourself!

So let your taste buds be pampered and visit one of the many wine cellars on the island. Learn about the production process of this famous fortified wine. Taste the different varieties, from sweet to dry, and let the rich aromas and complex flavors awaken your senses. Close your eyes as you take a sip and imagine tasting the sun-drenched vineyards and fertile soil of Madeira. It's an experience that takes you on a culinary journey!

Tip:: Bee Restaurante Faja dos Padres (Location here), you can do a 'Madeira wine' tour. You can also book an overnight stay at this unique location (link here). Both the vineyard, the small-scale hotel and the restaurant are owned by the same owner.

2. Limpets

This dish called 'limpets' is usually ordered as an appetizer to share. Limpets are simply local crustaceans that are briskly doused in olive oil, garlic and herbs (see photo below). It is a unique dish that you will find all over Madeira. Definitely worth a try!

3. Nini Design Center Restaurant

Do you like good dining with a beautiful view? Then we can absolutely have dinner Nini Design Center (Location here) with a view over Funchal. The food here was really fantastic and with the setting sun you look out on a fully lit Funchal. Each course was a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds.

More info can be found at their website.

4. Tuna steak with a view

In many restaurants you can order fresh tuna steaks, but no restaurant came close Restaurante Quinta do Furao (Location here). Not necessarily because their tuna steak is the very best, but purely because the location and view from their terrace are extraordinary. I mean, this isn't normal, is it? I really had to pinch myself when I enjoyed my tuna steak and white wine here.

Tip:: this restaurant is located at one of the most beautiful viewpoints of Madeira. You can read all about it in: Madeira | 17x the most beautiful places + things to do.

5. Steak & Sun

This is one of the best rated restaurants in Madeira. Pure indulgence with good steaks and fish dishes. Highly recommended, but beware: it is a small restaurant that often fills up quickly. Keep in mind that you often have to wait here for a table to become available.

6. Kampo by Chef Julio Pereira

The name already gives you a suspicion that there is something good to discover here. Kampo by Chef Julio Pereira (Location here) is a restaurant chain based on the vision and recipes of world famous chef Julio Pereira. You come here for unique meat dishes that literally make you lick your fingers. The meat here in the restaurant is 'dry aged', that is to say in large display cases, kept at the perfect temperature for weeks to mature, all because you then get the perfectly matured, tender piece of meat.

The home-made bread and the very tasty beef tartare were really fantastic too. But the icing on the cake was of course the Rib-eye for two people. I've eaten a lot of steaks in my life, but this was by far one of the best I've ever tasted.

Closing comments

After eating out several times a day in Madeira for a week, I can safely say that the quality of the food here is generally good. Anyone who pays a little more for a dish soon ends up in restaurants that maintain an extremely high quality standard. Don't be afraid to taste local dishes here, there is a lot to discover in Madeira from a culinary point of view, much more than has been shared with you in this article.
