Sights of Oranjemund

In the south of Namibia you will find the famous Orange River that flows into Oranjemund. This river is one of the only rivers in the country almost always with water and is therefore an important water source for the population. The town and the river are located directly on the border with South Africa. What is there to see and do in Oranjemund and the surrounding area? Below you will find the most famous sights.

1. Noordoewer

The village of Noordoewer (location here) is best known for the border crossing with South Africa and the B1 that passes from Windhoek. It is also known as a famous starting point for canoeing and rafting trips on the Orange River. Many grapes can also be found in this region because water is available here. The village is surrounded by vineyards on both the Namibian and South African sides.

2. Aussenkehr

Most residents of Aussenkehr (Location here) work in the nearby grape plantations. As a result, the population can fluctuate between 5.000 and 21.000 people depending on the season you visit. In Aussenkehr is a small supermarket and a gas station where you can only fill up with diesel, so make use of this. However, don't expect too much and especially enjoy the ride along the orange river.

3. C13 to Sedlingsdrift

This road is considered one of the most beautiful roads in Namibia. Along the Orange River you drive through beautiful mountain passes interspersed with beautiful views of the Orange River and the South Africa. Don't forget to stop and enjoy the various viewpoints and all the greenery around you. There is still an active mining area on both banks of the river. This road is 80 kilometers long before you reach Sedlingsdrift (location here) comes true.

M118 to Oranjemund

From the C13 you are very close and it is best to turn towards Orangemouth (Location here). This road has recently been rebuilt and is of good quality. On the left you look out over the Orange River and South Africa, while on the right you see the famous restricted area can be found. There are still many working diamond mines in the Sperrgebiet and the area is therefore not open to visitors. At the end of this beautiful route lies the town of Oranjemund.

As can be traced back, the Orange River flows into the Atlantic Ocean here. There is also a border crossing with South Africa here. The town of Oranjemund is best known for the fact that many orxy people walk around the town. Therefore, take a good look around you when you visit this city.

Closing comments

Anyone who wants to drive south from this point can choose to enter South Africa from Oranjemund. Our roadtrip However, Namibia is different, after Oranjemud we decide to go north again for, among other things Lüderitz, Kolmanskop en Sossusvlei to visit. More about that in the next blogs.
