Christmas markets 2023 | Prague

Prague is particularly photogenic all year round, but when the historic center of the Czech capital is decorated with glittering lights and Christmas decorations, you will feel like you are in a winter fairy tale. So it will not surprise you that Prague's Christmas markets are known as the most beautiful in the country.

The official opening of the Christmas season is on December 2 with the lighting of the large Christmas tree on the Old Town Square. The Christmas market on the Old Town Square is the most famous in Prague. But the best part is of course to visit all the Christmas markets in Prague. Stroll through the narrow streets to the stalls such as Wenceslas Square, Republic Square (náměstí Republiky) and Peace Square (náměstí Míru).

You can visit the Christmas markets from the end of November to the beginning of January, but they are also open during the Czech Christmas holidays (from December 24 to 26).

Christmas markets 2023 | Brno

Just like Prague, Brno also goes all out during the Christmas period. Scattered throughout the center of the Czech Republic's second city you will find stalls with Christmas decorations, Christmas presents and local Christmas wine, such as on the atmospheric Dominican square with the second largest wooden nativity scene in the world. The artwork is by woodcarver Jiří Halouzka and contains no fewer than 100 figures.

Freedom Square is also worth a visit, especially because of the large Christmas tree. The very first Christmas tree in the Czech Republic was placed here a century ago in exactly the same place. Get on the special Christmas tram and take an atmospheric tour through the city, view the city from above from the Ferris wheel or enjoy a beautiful music performance. Brno is not without reason UNESCO's Europe's Creative City of Music.

The Moravian city has put together a varied cultural and musical program every day throughout the Christmas period. You can watch different performances in both the afternoon and evening. Vienna is about a two-hour drive away. A combination of the Christmas markets of Brno with Vienna is easy.

In the South Bohemian capital České Budějovice there is plenty to do for young and old during the Christmas period. The extensive Advent market has wooden stalls where you can do your Christmas shopping and enjoy local delicacies such as a cup of hot punch, mulled wine, medovina (honey wine) and sweet trdelník.

Craftsmen will lovingly show you the art of old crafts and sell handmade items. Children can roll up their sleeves during one of the creative workshops. There is a cultural program and a lookout tower where you have a beautiful view of the cozy Christmas atmosphere in the city. An eye-catcher is the large skating rink around the Samson fountain, where you can of course also take a few swinging laps on the ice.

Christmas markets Czech Republic 2023 on castles and castles

Can you imagine anything more romantic than a Christmas market in the courtyard of a castle or fortress? We neither! You will find three very special Christmas markets within a maximum 1,5 hour drive from Prague. At the foot of the Giant Mountains lies the town of Kuks, which is best known as a former health resort and hospital. A cozy Christmas market is organized here on November 18, 19, 25 and 26 where craftsmen demonstrate their work and sell the most beautiful things. The perfect opportunity to shop for unique, handmade Christmas presents.

The fairytale castle Sychrov in Northern Bohemia is one of the few castles in the Czech Republic that you can visit in winter. Most castles and castles are closed to the public from November to April. So grab your chance, because during Advent the light pink castle is festively decorated and a visit to Sychrov is extra atmospheric. On November 25 and 26 there will be a lovely Christmas market, performances and at one of the stalls you can buy artisanal regional products and homemade gifts.

How about a glass Christmas bauble! The Liberec region is known for the production of glass Christmas decorations. Did you know that glass Christmas baubles have been made in the Czech Republic for more than a century? The handmade and painted glass Christmas decorations are world famous and are also sold in Dutch stores.

The courtyard of the particularly photogenic Křivoklát castle In Central Bohemia, the Advent period is transformed into the setting of a winter fairy tale. The cozy Christmas market in the Czech Republic can be visited on December 9 and 10 and December 16 and 17.
